Gracious, my days have been a bit nuts. I'm sorry this has taken so long - but here I am!

My day with Aaron was great! I really learned alot. I met him at his house in the morning and we drove into Detroit to his office. A very efficient man, Aaron has his cell phone set up to work with the speakers of his car and can therefore safely get a great deal done while he's driving to and from work. Sphinx makes a point of keeping up with the latest technology; being able to change and roll with the times is a key to survival for a young (and thriving) organization. We arrived at his office in the Rennaisance Center around ten. Being from the west side of the state, I'd never been there before and it was a dazzling experience. Aaron introduced me to his staff, which i very much enjoyed, and we met a representative of The Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan to discuss funding methods. I then got to join Aaron and one of his engaging and friendly staff members for a short, informal meeting over lunch, then it was off to another meeting - this one with Comerica Bank - about funding.
After a wonderfully successfull meeting, we headed back to Ann Arbor for a meeting at Zingermans, where Aaron was asked to join the board at NEW (Nonprofit Enterprise at Work). It was a very pleasant meeting, and the board members from NEW were very engaging, kind people. We then headed back to Aaron's home, wrapping up a long and productive day with a relaxing conversation about favorite movies.

In the end, my day provided an invaluable glimpse into a professional world full of dedicated people detirmined to make a positive difference in the world. I discovered that not only might I be able to survive and prosper in the professional world, but that nonprofit work (an area I hadn't considered - so determined to break into the arts or publishing) could be a valid way to not only earn my meals and put a roof over my head, but satisfy that part of my soul that won't be happy til I've done some good in this world.

Thanks again, Aaron! One more post coming... :)

My internship with Aaron Dworkin is tomorrow... I'm a little nervous. I hope I get enough sleep tonight and that I've got it all together tomorrow. Not fully sure what to expect.

Details to come!

Hello, readers!!

Hailing these days from Grand Rapids, MI, I'm Holly Hoover, the lesser-known second winner of the internship with Aaron Dworkin. Because the race was so close, Aaron graciously agreed to spend a day with both Nicole and I, for which I'm extremely grateful!

So what am I up to these days? Unpacking the contents of my dormroom from where it is currently plopped in the middle of my bedroom at home (which is about half the size of my dorm room... hm - anyone good at puzzles?), trying to find a job in publishing or something similarly book-related, and devouring all the classics I somehow managed to miss during my career as an English major at UM. I'm currently half-way through Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte where have you been all my life?

Aaron and I were going to complete my internship before I'd left campus in April, but last-minute events transpired against us and we'll be meeting now on the 18th! I'm very excited. And at least this way I'll have a car in Ann Arbor, and won't have to bum rides anymore off our esteemed Kathleen Stevens... ;) So stay tuned!

I'm currently using a friend's computer in her apartment at Calvin College and should probably give it back to her - but I'll be updating again soon!
